M103 - Open Cluster in Cassiopeia

M103 1

M103 Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781.

M103 is located in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a distance of approximately 8,500 light years.  This is the most distant of the Messier open cluster objects.  It is comprised of relatively few stars.  Harlow Shapley classified M103 as a “loose and poor cluster.  The age of the cluster has been placed at approximately 25 million years.  The bright red giant, designated WDS BUP 22, is a double star and its brightness and color dominates my image of M103.
