Crater Maurolycus

Maurolycus

The large “crater” near the center of the image above is named Maurolycus.  It is classified as a “Walled Plain" and is located in the heavily cratered south eastern quadrant of the Moon. It is a circular formation with a very steep wall formation and measures approximately 117 Km (69 miles) across.  There are numerous small craters across Maurolycus’s relatively flat floor.  The largest of these, located just north of the central peak, is designated Maurolycus M.  The large crater lying in the shadow of the terminator just left of Maurolycus is named Stofler. It is slightly larger than Mourolycus with a diameter of 129 Km (76 miles). Maurolycus was named for the a 16th century Italian scientist Francesco Maurolico
