Hickson Compact Group 76, located near the center of this image, is a compact interacting galaxy group in the constellation Serpens Caput (the Serpent's Head) at an estimated distance of approximately 427 million light-years (131 Mpc), based on the redshift of its brightest member galaxy, NGC 5941[1]. HCG 76 lies in the foreground of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2085 and contains at least seven member galaxies. An annotated image identifying the principal group members may be viewed here. The member galaxy identifications are based on published Hickson Compact Group references[2].
Compact galaxy groups represent some of the densest known galaxy environments and provide important laboratories for the study of gravitational interaction, tidal evolution, and galaxy merger processes[3,4]. The numerous faint background galaxies visible throughout the 34 arcminute field emphasize the richness and depth of the surrounding cluster environment.
