NGC 6503 is a spiral galaxy located in the northern constellation Draco at a distance of approximately 18 million light-years.[1,2] Classified as a SAB(s)bc spiral galaxy, NGC 6503 is a weakly barred spiral whose moderately wound arms are viewed at an inclination that reveals intricate dust lanes and star-forming regions throughout the disk.[2] An annotated cropped image emphasizing these features may be viewed here.
NGC 6503 is an interesting object due to its location near the edge of the Local Void, a vast region of space containing relatively few galaxies compared to surrounding areas.[1,3] Most galaxies reside in groups or clusters where gravitational interactions can influence their morphology and long-term evolution.[1] Despite its apparent isolation, the galaxy exhibits active star formation within its spiral arms, visible in this image as numerous blue stellar associations and bright star-forming regions.[1]
NGC 6503 possesses an unusually compact and bright central nucleus that appears nearly stellar in this image. Observationally, this differs from many spiral galaxies whose central luminosity gradually blends into the surrounding bulge and inner disk. Dynamical studies suggest that this small stellar-like nucleus constitutes a distinct kinematic component embedded within the galaxy's disk.[4]
This image reveals the galaxy's intricate fragmented dust structure, faint outer disk, and a rich background populated by far distant galaxies located beyond NGC 6503. The contrast between the nearby spiral galaxy and the numerous distant background galaxies illustrates the vast range of cosmic distances present within this image and provides visual insight into the large-scale structure of the universe.
